Building Effective Virtual Teams Through Credibility and Authenticity

What is it that makes building effective virtual teams so difficult? Many people believe that building effective virtual teams requires a huge amount of knowledge about the dynamics of building effective work teams. And, third, building an effective virtual team requires expertise that extends beyond what’s required for success with face-to-face groups. To succeed, virtual team leaders have to focus on many different things beyond building effective virtual teams that transcend their functional limitations.
One key area that we’ve seen a lot of people overlook when they’re working towards building effective virtual teams is the need for authenticity. It’s important to recognize your own personal strengths, but even more important is recognizing the strength of your team (and the strength of your company) – both individually and as a unit. This relates directly to building effective virtual teams, because the two most important ingredients in effective team development are authenticity and commitment to shared values.
Authenticity refers to the fact that your team members know that the other team members see the same person or thing that you do. A great example of this is a podcast. Two people make a podcast about their business. While one of the podcast team members speaks and explains, the other listens and then takes notes. This is authentic, because they believe that the information they’re sharing is relevant to them, and because they trust one another.
Commitment to shared values means that each member of your team is committed to putting what he or she thinks is important first. If there’s a disagreement within the podcast, it can be resolved. But in the meantime, the member with the “in” position continues to speak out and put forth his or her opinion. Each time he or she does that, their own credibility and effectiveness are boosted because others are aware that these opinions aren’t simply their own. In order to build effective virtual teams, you need to be sure that these personalities are real, not fake. For instance, when you’re building effective virtual teams, you shouldn’t hire someone who only has good things to say. You should also be sure that there is an authenticity to the different perspectives each member brings to the table. If one team member is highly creative and skilled at marketing, but has no business experience, that doesn’t mean that person will bring a lot to the table as a virtual team. On the other hand, if members have real experience and strengths in areas related to the business you run, they’ll be able to bring something to the table that your team didn’t even realize existed.
There’s a lot more to building effective virtual teams than just hiring a few key individuals and letting them go wild. You should be sure that you take a close look at each member of the virtual team to make sure that they have the skills, knowledge and attitude it takes to be an effective team. Then, you should ensure that you trust that people will bring the skills and knowledge they’ve learned to your co-located face-to- face teams.
